We travelled by car for 10 hours from Varanasi to Khajuraho. When we arrived it was already dark and we only caught a glimpse of one temple. The next morning began with breakfast on the rooftop restaurant of our hotel, right across from the temples. We could see 4 of the 18 temples here, and it was a truly spectacular sight -- humbling for any artist attempting to create something of lasting worth.
We have now been in Khajuraho for one week and have visited 4 of the 22 temples. It is physically possible to see all 22 temples in one or two days, but we have been stopped in our tracks. There is much to film and photograph here. The temples also teach much if you know the symbols employed in their plan and detail. Most of the temples are completely open, right up to the inner sanctum. What does one face when visiting the inner sanctum? Whichever symbol is employed, what does it point to? One enters the inner sanctum to become intimate with the mystery of the world and also the mystery of one's own self. Here, but also elsewhere, one may realize that the self of the world and one's own self are one and the same.
Oh... and we made a website for Hotel Zen, where we are staying in Khajuraho.... here’s a link: hotelzenkhajuraho.co.in
